Holidays

Lots to do today as we are off on holiday tomorrow.  Heading to Piperdam cabins in Tayside which can't come soon enough for us all.

The site used to be a quarry when I was little as we used to travel past it on the way to my Grans house every weekend so looking forward to seeing the changes over 34 years.

There seems lots to do, but looking off site our favourites so far are the Secret Bunker at Anstruther and the Sea Life Centre at St Andrews - with a bit of shopping thrown in (St Andrews looks better than Dundee with Joules and Fat Face though).

Saturday worries

Yesterday was a day I never want to see again.  It started off as a normal Saturday, Miss S drove herself to work in her new found freedom of car ownership and the rest of us enjoyed a bit of a lazy Saturday morning.

We nipped into to town - my mum is in a Nursing Home and needed some new clothes so we had that task to do, we wandered round a few shops, bought Master S a bar of Moo Chocolate which is dairy free so a fab treat.

On our return home Master S complained his eyes were funny, within 10 minutes he said his head hurt and 10 minutes later he was being sick and shaking and crying with the pain in his head.  Not one to flap I phoned NHS 111 as no child should be in that much pain  ever.  After the usual questions they put me through to a Nurse who gave us an appointment at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin within the hour. By the time we got up there the pain and sickness had subsided and he was back to normal.  The diagnoses - potential Migraine.  As  a sufferer myself I completely sympathise with him - just wish mine were so short lasting.

He's absolutely fine now, no side effects which is great but I'll know what to watch out for and treat earlier if there is ever a next time.

The Allergy Life

As our youngest has quite severe allergies to both dairy and egg I spend a lot of my time trying to find new things to cook/bake so hes not missing out on things.

He's in S3 (3rd year at secondary school), and has a good group of friends who understand his food issues and also the use of his Emerade (tm) auto injector (very important that people who spend a lot of time with someone who suffers from anaphylaxis know this as it could save a life).  It's also important that people recognise other allergies other than nuts/gluten too.

Lately I have experimented in the kitchen with millionaire shortbread, blueberry muffins, rice pudding and carrot cake.  The carrot cake needs a little bit more work but on the whole there were no complaints - and it was all eaten in double quick time.  I'll add the recipes shortly

In the beginning

We are a family of 4 who live in the North East of Scotland.  A former army family with 8 house moves in 21 years under our belts.

There is Dad, Mum (ooh that's me), our eldest at 19 who suffers from eczema, and our youngest at 13 and the allergic one - not forgetting the hound - our collie Sprockitt.

Our youngest is allergic to Dairy, egg, dust, pollen, cats and sadly now peanuts.  It doesn't stop him though as he does field hockey for our local team and Air Cadets too.  Nothing holds him back.

He was diagnosed at 6 months old after failing to thrive for 4 months - life changed from that moment on. I was exclusively BF so had to cut out dairy, egg and soya from my diet immediately too.  We saw a difference immediately though it took months for him to hit developmental goals he got there.

I've learnt to adapt cooking, baking and every day life - you just have to - it's life or death.

We all enjoy dabbling in the kitchen, though I'll never bake as pretty Bake Off standard - they do taste good.

This blog will not only share my recipes and creations but also look at my personal diet and walking goals.
